What are pheromones?

What are pheromones?

A person's attractiveness is influenced not only by physical appearance. Odors that are naturally emitted by us play a very important role. Pheromones are also common in the animal and plant world. They are used both for communication between individuals and species, as well as for defense purposes, marking territory and acquiring sexual partners. What are pheromones? Read on and get to know them better!

What are pheromones?

This name comes from the Greek words ferein, meaning carries, and horme, meaning stimulation. It was introduced only in 1959 thanks to two researchers - Peter Karlson and Martin Lüscher. Pheromones are defined as semiochemical substances with one dominant ingredient. Most often, they are volatile, and their presence in low concentrations makes it difficult for scientists to isolate and conduct detailed studies. It is known for certain that they are found in sweat, breath and urine. It has been established that they can be divided into over 30 types, including: on:

  • defensive,
  • repellent,
  • sexual,
  • finding food,
  • expressing dominance,
  • aggregation,
  • track.

How do pheromones work?

Contrary to popular belief, pheromones are odorless. Even if they are present in high concentration, their aroma is considered very delicate. The organ called the vomeronasal organ (VNO) located in the nasal septum is responsible for their reception. The impulse for smell travels from the VNO to the brain, to a structure called the hypothalamus. This is how the olfactory impression is created. Natural pheromones occurring in nature were first tested in the 1970s. The research group was the population of female prisoners. Women had to give up scented cosmetics for several months. They wore cotton balls under their arms, which soaked them with sweat. The inmates were supposed to smell them. After some time, it turned out that the menstrual cycle of all the women examined was synchronized. Other experiments have shown that pheromones are also responsible for strengthening the bond between parents and children. This is one of the theories explaining the greater attachment of sons to their mothers and daughters to their fathers.

Male and female pheromones

Men's pheromones are much stronger than women's. We are talking here primarily about androstadienone, present in semen and sweat. Studies have shown that its secretion increases the attractiveness of men in the eyes of women. Scientists reproduced a synthetic version of this pheromone in the laboratory and used it to conduct an interesting experiment. They organized the so-called speed dating. Some women were given androstadienone to sniff before meeting their partners. It turned out that those women who had contact with the scent before the conversation found their interlocutors more attractive. This aroma increased sexual potential and made men appear more handsome and intriguing to women. In turn, the fair sex, surrounded by pheromones, becomes more self-confident and open in contacts. It is not entirely known what the mechanism of action of pheromones is, but it is certain that they exert an influence in a subconscious way that is beyond our control.

How to use pheromones in everyday life?

The power of pheromones can be successfully used every day. Natural compounds are now very effectively recreated in laboratories and sold, for example, in the form of perfumes. Interestingly, they are useful not only in male-female relationships. You can also use them to achieve success in your professional career. It has been proven that pheromones help in business negotiations. They emphasize personality and self-confidence, making the contractor more open to discussion and learning about the advantages of the service or product. It is recommended to spray perfume with pheromones on bare skin, preferably around the neck, bends of knees and elbows. Their duration of action depends primarily on the concentration and ranges from 4 to 8 hours. On the Ferosup.pl website you will find the most interesting and strongest pheromones.
