The converted amount of plant material corresponding to the specified amount of extract, according to the given factor. It is not the physical mass of the extract contained in the capsule. When assessing a product, it is worth distinguishing between these two values and standardization.
The output quantity is not the capsule weight
The equivalent represents the amount of plant material corresponding to the declared amount of extract according to the given ratio. With the simplified notation DER 10:1, 100 mg of extract may correspond to 1000 mg of starting material, if the manufacturer confirms this basis. This does not mean that the capsule physically contains a gram of powder or that it is ten times more potent. The part of the plant, the solvent and whether the mass concerns a native extract or a preparation with the addition of a carrier are also important.
A large number corresponding to the weight of the starting plant is sometimes highlighted on the front. The actual weight of the extract and its specifications are still needed for comparison. The mass ratio itself does not determine which compounds went into the extract or what part was discarded in the process.
Meaning and application
The declared equivalent of the raw material may look impressive, but it is not the same as the actual weight of the extract. When comparing offers, you need both information and a basis for portions. The larger number in the title alone does not determine the content or quality.
In practice
Record the extract mass, DER ratio and any standardization separately. If the manufacturer provides an equivalent, check its description and unit. Do not assume the existence of missing data, and perform calculations only on consistent declarations regarding the same portion.
Do not compare the equivalent weight of one product with the weight of the actual extract of another. Don't interpret the ratio as a multiplier of effectiveness. For a fair comparison, we also need the species, part of the plant and the specification of the preparation.
