Folates are a group of compounds belonging to vitamin B9. The name refers to a leaf, which fits well with their presence in green leafy vegetables. The development of research on this vitamin has shown that one nutritional function may be associated with many related chemical forms.
Group name and various forms
Folates include compounds related to the activity of vitamin B9. They can appear in various forms in food and preparations, so it is not worth treating all names as separate vitamins. At the same time, the name of the specific form remains important when reading the label. The comparison should take into account the amount of vitamin and the unit, not the mere mass of the providing compound. Folic acid is the name of a specific form, not the entire concept of folates.
Meaning and application
Natural folates are found, among others, in vegetables, legumes and some animal products. They participate in changes related to the transfer of one-carbon units. Folic acid is one of the forms of vitamin B9, but it does not exhaust the entire concept of "folate". Other declared forms are also found in supplements, for example 5-MTHF derivatives. When comparing labels, it is worth distinguishing the name of the form from its quantity in a serving. A high percentage of RWS does not automatically describe individual needs.
In practice
The group term and the name of a single chemical form should be read separately. Folic acid and specific 5-MTHF derivatives are not two random names for an identical molecule. They have a common vitamin context, but their declaration requires precision. Also important on the label are units, usually micrograms, and whether the amount refers to a tablet or a whole serving. A high percentage of the reference value does not constitute an assessment of the needs of a specific person. The form itself does not describe all the features of the product. When comparing preparations, it is worth comparing the name of the material, the amount of vitamin and other ingredients, instead of relying solely on the term "active form".
