Magnesium is an element with the symbol Mg, occurring both in inanimate nature and in organisms. An interesting fact is its presence in the center of the chlorophyll molecule, a pigment related to photosynthesis. In human nutrition, it is a mineral component, and its history includes the development of mineral and salt chemistry.
Characteristics and context
Dietary sources of magnesium include seeds, nuts, whole grains and green vegetables. In supplements, it occurs in numerous compounds, such as citrate, lactate and oxide. The mass of these raw materials is not equal to the amount of magnesium itself, because they also contain other elements. Therefore, the declared Mg content per portion is compared, and not only the salt weight. The chemical form may have technological significance, but its name itself does not replace information about the full composition of the preparation.
Magnesium citrate and magnesium are not names for the same mass. The first term describes the source, the second may mean the amount of the element. When comparing preparations, choose the magnesium content in an identical portion base. Don't judge a product based solely on the value next to the salt name if there is also a separate magnesium table on the packaging.
Meaning and application
The names of chemical forms help identify the raw material, but do not create a simple ranking for all users. Capsules, tablets and powders also differ in their method of use and additional ingredients. Check whether the manufacturer provides the full name of the compound. The marketing term "well-digestible" itself does not replace data on the formulation and amount of the ingredient.
If the table declares 100 mg of magnesium in one tablet, two such tablets contain 200 mg. However, increasing the number of tablets is not a way to independently determine your needs. First read the recommendations on the label. When comparing price, divide the cost of the package by the number of recommended servings, not by the large number of milligrams of any raw material.
In practice
Magnesium occurs in food and many multi-ingredient products. A preparation described as vitamins with minerals may duplicate the content of a separate product with magnesium. Do not increase supply without considering the entire list. In case of diseases or treatment, it is worth discussing the selection of the preparation with a specialist, showing its label and method of planned use.
