Description of a skin condition with insufficient water content in the stratum corneum. It may also affect oily skin. It should not be automatically identified with a dry skin type or assessed solely by one symptom.

Skin condition and type

Dehydration in skin care language refers to insufficient hydration of the stratum corneum. It may also occur in skin with increased sebum secretion: water and fat do not describe the same parameter. Tension after washing does not allow you to independently determine all the causes. When observing, it is worth taking into account the frequency of washing, environmental conditions and product compatibility. Changing one element of your routine helps you recognize the reaction better than introducing multiple cosmetics at the same time.

Drinking fluids and using cosmetics refer to different levels of water management. It is not possible to determine the hydration of the entire body from the appearance of one part of the skin. The nursing concept of dehydration should not be used as a stand-alone health diagnosis.

Meaning and application

The feeling of tightness and lack of comfort can be recorded as observations without assigning a diagnosis. The concepts of dry and dehydrated skin should not lead to the automatic choice of increasingly stronger cosmetics. What matters is the course of symptoms and the entire routine.

In practice

Write down when discomfort occurs: after washing, after a specific product or under specific conditions. Compare the preparations used and their instructions. Introduce one new product to be able to assess its impact on the comfort of care.

Don't judge the condition of your skin solely by the temporary viscosity of the cosmetic or a popular test from the Internet. Pain, cracking, severe redness or persistent discomfort require consultation. A cosmetic description of dehydration should not obscure a problem that requires diagnosis.
