Reducing the perceived intensity of odor during longer exposure. It can make the person wearing the perfume stop noticing it clearly. The mere weakening of one's own sensation does not prove that the smell has completely disappeared from the environment.
What changes in the perception of smell
With a constant stimulus, the olfactory system gradually limits paying attention to it. It's easy to notice when you enter the room: at first the smell is distinct, but after some time it becomes background. After leaving and returning, you can recognize her again. In perfumes, a similar phenomenon makes it difficult to assess one's own scent. It is worth separating three things: the presence of substances on the skin, their floating in the air and the current feeling of the testing person. These are different stages of one experience.
It is helpful to separate adaptation from composition persistence. The first concept concerns the reaction of a person, the second one concerns the behavior of fragrance materials after application. A test with breaks and a note about the conditions allows you to evaluate them separately, without adding perfume every time your own impression weakens.
Meaning and application
The nose may stop paying attention to a scent that has been present for a long time. This does not allow you to assess how much of the composition is left on the skin or how intensely the environment perceives it. Adding subsequent portions solely on this basis can be misleading.
In practice
Compare the scent in similar conditions by recording the time of application and the number of sprays. Instead of smelling your wrist every now and then, do something else. After a break, check the impression again, without adding another composition in the same place.
Don't compare a single experience with a guaranteed uptime. A decreased sense of smell may also have other causes; a persistent or sudden change requires a separate assessment rather than purchasing increasingly stronger perfumes. Adaptation does not prove the quality of the formulation either.
