Allantoin is an organic compound found in cosmetics under the INCI name Allantoin. It occurs in nature, but the raw material for recipes can also be obtained by synthesis methods. Its history is connected with research on the transformation of nitrogen compounds, and currently it is a well-recognized care material.
Characteristics and context
In cosmetics, it is used, among others, as a skin conditioning ingredient. It appears in creams, balms and preparations intended for daily care. The name on the label does not indicate its concentration or the entire product characteristics. The properties of every plant in which allantoin naturally occurs cannot be attributed to the preparation. The intended use of the cosmetic is determined by the full recipe, instructions and manufacturer's information.
Meaning and application
The properties of an ingredient must be considered together with its form and method of inclusion in the formulation. Cream, gel and cleansing preparation have different bases and different contact times with the skin. Even if Allantoin is present in each of them, it does not mean that they feel the same when used. Solubility and cooperation with other ingredients are also important for technology. The mere presence of a name does not represent the entire cosmetic design process.
In practice
It is worth separating the description of a chemical compound from the description of the plant with which it is associated. The addition of allantoin does not automatically mean the presence of the entire plant extract and all its ingredients. Similarly, the name "care" does not mean that it applies to all types of skin damage. Before use, read the intended use and recommendations on the label. A fair comparison of cosmetics takes into account the full INCI and the type of product, instead of basing the assessment on one recognizable compound.
