Glycerin, chemically glycerol, is a colorless, viscous liquid belonging to polyhydric alcohols. It is naturally associated with the structure of fats: it is part of the structure of triglycerides. Its discovery was related to the development of fat chemistry, and today it is obtained from various technological processes, including from plant raw materials.
Characteristics and context
In cosmetics, it is valued as a humectant, i.e. an ingredient that helps bind water. It also serves as a solvent and an element influencing the feel of the product during application. It is found in creams, gels and many other formulations. In the INCI list it appears under the name Glycerin. It is the same chemical name regardless of the marketing emphasis on origin. Its presence does not yet describe the entire recipe: the final properties also depend on the quantity and other ingredients.
Glycerin is found in various cosmetics, not only in products described as highly moisturizing. Its role depends on the entire formulation. It is impossible to evaluate a cream, gel or balm only by finding one word in the INCI. It is useful to simultaneously read the purpose, method of use and other ingredients that make up the finished product.
Meaning and application
Glycerin is a water-binding ingredient. The impression after application also depends on other ingredients of the formulation and their proportions. One formula will be light, another thicker or more enveloping. Don't try to calculate concentration from just the feeling of viscosity. The functional character of a cosmetic is the result of the entire composition, not a single raw material assessed separately.
The entry Glycerin does not in itself confirm the plant origin or vegan nature of the entire cosmetic. Such declarations require additional information from the manufacturer. If they are important to you, please check them separately. Similarly, the list of fragrance notes does not say anything certain about the glycerin content; The INCI and description of the fragrance composition are used for different purposes.
In practice
Choose a product intended for a given application and place of application. A facial cosmetic, a massage product and an intimate preparation are not interchangeable just because they contain glycerin. Take into account the instructions and your own tolerance. If you experience irritation or doubt, don't judge the cause based on one name; full formulation evaluation may be needed.
