Creation of a layer on the skin surface that limits water evaporation. It is one of the mechanisms of action of care ingredients. It does not mean that water is delivered deep into the skin or that every occlusive preparation is suitable for every use.

Reduce evaporation

The occlusive layer makes it difficult for water to escape from the skin surface. It can be created after using materials of different fatness and consistency, so it does not always feel heavy. Occlusion is not synonymous with water delivery or a universal solution to every skin problem. Its severity depends on the amount and type of product. You should not cover any cosmetic or medicinal preparation yourself with a dressing, because such use changes the conditions of contact with the skin.

A more noticeable layer does not automatically mean more effective care. Tolerance, area and conditions of use also matter. A preparation intended for body skin does not become a product for use on mucous membranes just because it creates slip or limits drying.

Meaning and application

Occlusion involves limiting water loss through the layer on the skin's surface. From the user's point of view, the comfort and intended use of the finished formula are important. A noticeable film does not have to mean either a disadvantage or an advantage for every person.

In practice

Check what area of care and method of application the manufacturer provides. Rate the product in the quantity described on the label. Do not increase the intensity of action by tightly wrapping the skin or covering the preparation if the instructions do not provide for it.

Do not confuse its occlusive properties with providing treatment for all dry skin problems. Damage, severe irritation and persistent discomfort require separate evaluation. Do not use body cosmetics on mucous membranes without such a purpose.
