A water-binding compound, naturally present in the body and used in various forms in cosmetics. It may also appear on the INCI list as a salt, for example Sodium Hyaluronate. The formulas differ in the type of raw material, its particle size and concentration. The presence of hyaluronic acid in a care cosmetic does not mean the same effect as a treatment using a filler.

Characteristics and context

Hyaluronic acid is used in various products, but a care cosmetic is not the equivalent of a treatment. The description of the filler should not be transferred to the cream or serum. First, determine the category and purpose of the product. The method of application and the useful effect result from the specific formulation and instructions, and not only from the presence of a common name.

INCI includes, among others, Sodium Hyaluronate, which is the name of the salt related to this ingredient. The manufacturer may also describe the type of raw material or particle size. These details should not be added based on a general title. If the formulation contains several forms, do not treat their number as an independent guarantee of greater effectiveness of the cosmetic.

Meaning and application

The declared percentage may refer to the pure ingredient or to a prepared complex or solution. This is not equivalent information. Look for the manufacturer's explanation before comparing the two values. Do not calculate the content based on the consistency of the serum or the place in the advertisement. A clear description of the percentage basis is more useful than a high number without specifying what it refers to.

In practice

Hyaluronic acid is a water-binding ingredient, but the perceived comfort depends on the entire cosmetic. Pay attention to the purpose, consistency and other ingredients. Use the preparation according to the instructions. Don't mix it yourself with other raw materials just to increase the percentage; a finished cosmetic is a developed formulation, not a list of elements for arbitrary conversion.
