Maca is a plant in the cabbage family, known as Lepidium meyenii. It comes from the Peruvian Andes, where it is cultivated in cool high-altitude conditions. Its edible, thickened underground part has long been used in local cooking: it is dried, boiled and ground into powder. Maca reached the international botanical trade from its origins as a regional food.
Characteristics and context
Maca comes in several colours, including yellow, red and dark forms. Colour does not automatically identify a different species or an identical extract composition. Supplement formulas use both powder and extracts. “Peruvian ginseng” is a commercial name: maca does not belong to the genus Panax. When comparing products, consider the form of the material, the plant part and the declared serving.
The offers include dried, ground matzo raw material and further processed preparations. The terms powder and extract are not interchangeable. Pay attention to the botanical name, part of the plant and type of raw material. These are the basics of identification: only after checking them is it worth comparing the portion size and the number of capsules in the package.
Meaning and application
The 10:1 notation describes the ratio of plant material to extract if the manufacturer uses it as DER. It does not automatically mean ten times greater effectiveness. The large number on the front may refer to the declared raw material equivalent and not the actual weight of the extract. Verify that the two pieces of information are separated and refer to the same portion.
The color names of matzo appearing in offers help describe the raw material, but do not create an independent quality ranking. The note black, red or yellow is not enough to predict the effect. Before purchasing, read the composition table and manufacturer's recommendations. If the formulation contains several plants, do not attribute the entire declared weight to matzo alone.
In practice
Choose products with as comparable specifications as possible and calculate the cost of the recommended portion. Also take into account the type of coating and additional ingredients. Maca is a supplement ingredient, not a promise of a specific level of libido or hormones. If you have any doubts about combining it with other preparations, it is useful to consult based on the specific product label.
